I haven’t written in a while. There have been a lot of thoughts floating around in my mind, a lot of change that is occurring within me and within our nation these past 6 months. I am currently working on the back end of my blog and putting some things in place to build it, along with some other endeavors I am interested in. However, I felt that it was necessary not to stay silent.
I’ve been listening to “Stand Up” from the Harriet movie on repeat lately. The more I listen, the more the sting of the lyrics get to me. Right now we are experiencing societal unrest. There is a lot of pain and turmoil that comes when witnessing heinous acts. I see it, I feel it and I have experienced racism myself. My heart goes out to those that have lost their lives at the hand of another. I think this right here, is where the problem lies. The sin issue in our world is great. Murder by anyone, taking the life of another at any point, is completely unacceptable.
This song really hits different when you understand how closely the lyrics line up with what Jesus did for us on the cross. It lives and breathes self-sacrifice for the greater good. Harriet Tubman gave herself, and put herself in danger, for the sake of her people. She embarked on a mission to set black people free from slavery. Her last words are said to be “I go to prepare a place for you.” Sound familiar? Jesus came to the earth to live a sinless life, died for our sins on the cross, and rose again on the 3rd day to prepare a home for us in heaven with the Father. He paid the price so we could be reconciled with God. I love this song. I love the message of the movie. And I think that if we can get back to focusing on God, meeting him, seeking him in all things, then somehow we can come to a place of peace and rest as he leads the way to true freedom. Focusing on God takes the distractions out of the picture. Enjoy this sweet video from the Harriet move. “Stand Up” sung by Cynthia Erivo.
